American School, mid 20th C. Oil on canvas painting depicting a male figure shoveling rocks or coal into a horse drawn wagon while a female figure walks towards him, while other figures watch from a nearby house. Back of canvas titled faintly "Street Cleaning Day" with additional faint inscription below "L,,," and signed "W. Smith", en verso, possibly William E. Smith (Ohio/Tennessee, 1913-1997). Housed in a contemporary gilt frame with a linen liner. Sight: 17 1/2" H x 21 1/4" W. Framed: 21 3/4" H x 25 3/4" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Signature on front added later, otherwise no visible retouching. Some light grime to surface.
