Large American School portrait of General George Washington, after the original by John Faed (Scottish,1819-1902) titled "Washington Receiving a Salute on the Field of Trenton". The oil on canvas painting depicts Washington astride a white horse and holding his sword forward in his right hand. A fallen British flag lays beneath a drum in the left foreground, a sword in the middle foreground, with American troops and artillery in the background. Unsigned. Housed in a grain painted and carved wood frame. Sight: 92 1/4" H x 69 1/4" W. Framed: 102" H x 79" W. Late 19th century, possibly painted to commemorate the Centennial Celebration of Washington's Inauguration.
PROVENANCE: The collection of a Tennessee institution.
CONDITION: Canvas is dry with overall craquelure and scattered areas of tenting to paint. Overall grime. 2 1/2" x 2" L tear to canvas lower left edge and approximate 1 1/2" tear upper right. Some buckling lower right corner. Abrasions and losses to canvas perimeter. Frame with overall scattered wear and losses to paint decoration.
