Chinese inlaid rosewood and white jade Ruyi scepter; the rosewood frame inlaid with silver wire decoration of flowers, and inset with three white jade plaques of graduated size, each profusely carved with landscape and figural scenes. Provenance: collection of Gilbert Fox of Nashville, acquired in 1972 from Chinese Arts & Crafts Ltd., Hong Kong (original receipt retained, along with 1972 certificate of antiquity from the Hong Kong Art Craft Merchants Association, both of which will be furnished to the winning bidder). A copy of a 1973 appraisal by Allain Ramsey, Member of the Appraisers Association of America, also accompanies this lot; it states that the white jade plaques depict the life and work of a famous Chinese poet and were carved during the Kang Hsu period (1690-1712) and attributes the inlaid rosewood scepter to the late Chia Ch’ing or early Tau Kuang period (1790-1840). 21-1/4″L.
