Harriet Whitney Frishmuth (American, 1880-1980) bronze sculpture, "The Star", depicting a nude female, standing and reaching toward the heavens with one arm. Stamped at base of sculpture "Harriet Frishmuth 1918 / #134 Gorham Co. Founders 0504 (or Q505)." Height 19-3/4" including black polished stone base (base is 3/4"H). Biography (Courtesy Askart, The Artists' Bluebook/Paul Sternberg, Sr., "Art by American Women"): Born in Philadelphia, Harriet Frishmuth became one of the ground-breaking female sculptors of the early 20th century. She studied art with Auguste Rodin and Gutzon Borgium, but also undertook the study of dissection at the New York College of Physicians. Her Beaux Arts Style sculptures earned acclaim in exhibitions at the National Academy of Design, the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, the Salon in Paris, the Golden Gate International Exposition, and the National Association of Women Painters and Sculptors. Provenance: Estate of Beatrice Johnson McElroy, Rogersville, Alabama. Condition: Few scattered pinpoint abrasions to belly area, and a few very light scattered abrasions or blemishing to lower torso. 1-1/2" light scratch to upper chest, extending from shoulder to nipple. Base has some scattered light scratches and abrasions.
