A figure in the left foreground travels on horseback with a dog and second horse past ruins, a waterfall, and a cave where other figures, possibly fellow travelers, are sheltering. Billowing, darkening clouds fill the atmospheric sky, encroaching on a distant castle or village atop a hillside at upper right. With partial, old “Ita[ly?]” sticker affixed to verso. Housed in a wormy painted and giltwood frame. Sight: 28 in. H x 38 in. W Framed: 33 1/2 in. H x 43 1/2 in. W. Continental, 18th c. or earlier.
