Continental school fresco painting on plaster laid to panel, possibly an allegory of painting. An artist at left holds a palette and paintbrushes and is accompanied by a woman as they walk toward a central putto. Three figures admire an object — possibly a painting shown partially from behind — that rests on the ground, with two other putto at right. All set against a gilt background. Housed in a wooden frame with remnants of gilt. Sight: 10 1/2 in. H x 35 in. W. Framed: 15 in. H x 39 1/2 in. W. Likely French or Italian, cIrca 1800 or earlier.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Michael Spalding, Nashville, TN.
CONDITION: With surface grime plus cracking, flaking, and areas of loss throughout, especially to gilt background. Frame with extensive abrasions and losses.
