Two (2) Tennessee related books, including The Tennessee Gazetteer, 1834, and Sketches of Prominent Tennesseans, 1888. 1st item: The Tennessee Gazetteer or Topographical Dictionary by Eastin Morris, 1834. Published by W. Hasell Hunt and Company, Banner and Whig Office, Nashville. 12mo, 178 pages with appendix and pasted errata square, rebound in quarter tan calf leather with original boards, black leather label with 23k gold title lettering, covers wrapped in Mylar. 7 1/4" H x 4 3/4" W x 1 1/8" D. Early 19th century. 2nd item: Sketches of Prominent Tennesseans, First Edition, compiled and edited by the Hon. William S. Speer, 1888. Published by Albert B. Tavel, Nashville. Quarto, 579 gilt edged pages with photogravure frontispiece and 46 portraits with tissue paper guards, most with facsimile signatures, old rebinding in tooled dark brown leather with gilt lettering to covers and original spine, green floral wallpaper end papers. 12" H x 9 5/8" W x 2" D. Late 19th century. CONDITION: 1st item: Pages with foxing spots, areas of dampstaining, tears, ink inscriptions from previous owner, etc. to be expected from age. Professionally repaired, notes are as follows: Adhesive tape removed; adhesives cleaned from paper surfaces. Text sections separated, pages repaired as needed using japanese repair paper and methylcelulose adhesive. Text resewn by hand on new cords and backed…Original front paper cleaned and laid down with repairs along edges of leather. Rear paper replaced with period paper distressed to blend with original materials. New inner paper hinges; original paste downs retained. Missing flyleaves replaced with period paper. 2nd item: Rebound covers in worn condition with areas of loss, largest 5 1/2", cracks, to leather. Pages with tears, dampstaining, foxing spots, toning, etc. to be expected from age. Frontispiece, title page, and part of index separated from spine. Portraits "210 – Barrett", "263 – Stokes", "297 – Buist", "445 – Jackson", and "570 – Baxter" are not present. Retail pencil marks, top right of front end paper.
