Two (2) Kentucky stoneware pottery jars. 1st item: Large Kentucky jar with remnants of applied strap handles and two incised lines on upper shoulder, impressed mark "Griggs & Grinstead Waco KY" , and impressed 8 gallon capacity mark (attributed to John Parker Grinstead and Lucien Griggs, Madison Co., KY). 19 1/2" H x 13" dia. 3rd Quarter 19th century. 2nd item: Kentucky 3 gallon stoneware pottery jar with lug handles, incised line around the upper shoulder and impressed "3" denoting capacity, attributed to George W. Doane (d. 1870). 13" H x 10" D. 39 lbs total. Mid 19th century. Provenance: Estate of Lynn Scholl Renau, Louisville, Kentucky. CONDITION: 1st item: Breaks and losses to both handles. Interior hairline extending from rim to base. Stains/discolorations visible from exterior, mostly interior of jar. Scattered chipping and fleabites to rim. Firing imperfection to body. 2nd item: Scattered fleabites to outer rim, inner rim with fleabites and two chips. Slightly mis-shapen.
