1763 John Baskerville Bible, brown leather front and backboards, spine with raised bands, gilt floral stamp decoration and red title label. Title page reads "The Holy Bible CONTAINING THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW: Tranf(s)lated out of the Original Tongues and the With the former Translations Diligently Compared and Revif(s)ed By His Majesty's Special Command. APPOINTED TO BE READ IN CHURCHES. CAMBRIDGE, Printed by JOHN BASKERVILLE, Printer to the University. MDCCLXIII (1763). CUM PRIVILEGIO." Beginning end pages together with inserted pages record the family histories of several families, including that of William Woods, native of Ireland, who immigrated to the United States/ Baltimore, Maryland in 1785 and his wife Mary Haggart of Scotland. Several pages detail the births, marriages, and deaths of the family members, beginning with the marriage of William Woods and Mary Haggart on June 7th, 1787 and ending with the death of John Durborow who died on June 21st 1844. Inscription dated December 13th, 1978 describes how bible was purchased at auction by Towne Miller for the price of $5, back of front page. 18 3/4" H x 12 1/2" W x 4 1/8 D. CONDITION: Front cover, first, and last few pages separated from spine. Scattered foxing and browning to some of the interior pages.
