Item 1: Hank Williams Sr. (Sept. 17, 1923 Jan. 1, 1953) signed page of lyrics to an unpublished song, titled I NEVER CRY IN MY DREAMS. 8-1/2" x 11" three-hole paper. The song, written from the point of view of a man who still loves a woman who betrayed him, is typewritten and also includes the hand-written address of the Alabama home Williams shared with his mother: 318 N. McDoug St., Montgomery, Ala. Born Hiram King Williams, "Hank" Williams came from humble beginnings to earn a place in history as one of the most important Country and Western music artists of all time. While in Montgomery, he formed the Drifting Cowboys band, which was managed by his mother. She allowed him to drop out of school to devote all of his time to his music career. In his short 29 years, Williams recorded 35 singles (5 released posthumously) that hit Billboard Magazine's Top 10 Country & Western Best Sellers chart, including 11 that ranked number one. He died on New Year's Day, 1953 from heart failure brought on by pills and alcohol. In addition to Williams' handwritten signature is his handwritten Alabama address (accompanied by letter of authenticity from Roger Epperson). 8-1/2" x 11" three-hole paper (reinforced). Item 2: Page of typewritten lyrics to NEATH A COLD GRAY SLAB OF STONE, the original title to the song published as NEATH A COLD GRAY TOMB OF STONE, co-written by Hank Williams and Mel Foree. This song was recorded in : Shreveport, LA in recording sessions from August 1948 through May 1949 and appeared on five (5) album releases including; (1) Title: Just Me And My Guitar, Released: 1985, Label: Country Music Foundation, Format: LP 12": Catalog Number: CMF-006; (2) Title: Hank Williams On The Air, Released: 1985, Label: POLYDOR, Format: LP 12", Catalog Number: 827 531-1 Y-2; (3) Title: Let's Turn Back The Years, July 1951 – June 1952, Released: 1987, Label: POLYDOR, Format: LP 12" and CD, Catalog Number: 833 749-1 Y-2/2; (4) Title: Rare Demos: First To Last, Released: 1990, Label: Country Music Foundation, Format: CD, Catalog Number: CMF-067D; (5) The song appears twice on the compilation CD, Title: The Complete Hank Williams, Released: 1998, Label: Mercury, Format: CD, Catalog Numbers: Set 536077-2, CD Numbers: 536084-2 and 536086-2. The signature and hand-writing on this item have been authenticated by Roger Epperson, Roger Epperson Authentication LTD (letter of authenticity included with lot). The items in this lot and another country music lot in this sale came from the estate of the late Mel Foree (Born July 25, 1911. Died October 28, 1990). This lot also includes a copy (not the original) of the copyright transfer agreement sent from Acuff-Rose Publications, Inc. to Thomas Foree outlining all songs written and co-written by Mel Foree and includes these two songs on the list as written by Mel Foree and Hank Williams. This copyright transfer agreement was sent and executed in 1968. These items have remained in the possession of family members since Mr. Foree's passing. Mr. Foree was hired by Nashville's famous Acuff-Rose company to write country and western songs and worked for them from the 1940s through the 1980s. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame and they dubbed him "Nashville's first songplugger." He co-wrote some of the most famous country songs of all time including six that are on the 1998 box-set release The Complete Hank Williams. Mr. Foree also co-wrote "Nobody's Child" with Cy Coben, which was first recorded by Hank Snow and later by Lonnie Donegan in 1956, which went to #2 in the UK. It was recorded again by Tony Sheridan and the Beat Boys (The Beatles) in 1961 and by Karen Young in 1969 where it went to #6 in the UK. Hank Williams Jr. also covered it reaching #46 on the US Country charts. The Traveling Wilburys' recorded a version in 1990 that made it to #44 on the UK charts. Another Mel Foree song widely published by accomplished artists is "No One Will Ever Know" (by Mel Foree and Fred Rose) appearing on Roy Orbison's album "In Dreams" released in 1963.
