Three (3) framed insurance company advertisements or signs: Fireman's Fund, Hartford and the California Insurance Co. 1st item: A Hartford Fire Insurance Company reverse painted glass sign with the company's logo depicting a stag in a grassy field before a distant mountain. Image is gold and black with blue border featuring, in gold, the words "Hartford Fire Insurance Company Hartford Conn." In a modern giltwood frame with green paint. Note: Image is after Sir Edwin Landseer's (English, 1802 -1873) 1851 painting "The Monarch of the Glen," in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh. Sight: 19 5/8" H x 13" W. Frame: 21 11/16" H x 15 1/8" W. 2nd item: A Fireman's Fund Insurance Company chromolithograph depicting a fireman rescuing a young girl from a burning building. The company's name is written in gold in the dark blue border surrounding the image. In a modern wood frame. Sight: 23 1/2" H x 15 7/8" W. Frame: 28 9/16" H x 21 13/16" W. 3rd item: A California Insurance Company chromolithograph in black, blue, and pink with image depicting the company's headquarters in San Francisco and advertisement text below. Text in the image reads: "Marine & Fire California Insurance Co." Printed by the New York City lithography firm Major & Knapp (formerly Sarony, Major & Knapp) between 1867-1872 when the firm was located at the 71 Broadway addressed listed on the print. Housed in a modern wood frame with gilt fillet. Sight: 18 3/4" H x 19 5/8" W. Frame: 25" H x 26" W. Late 19th/early 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of James Lewis, Carthage, Tennessee.
CONDITION: All items are in overall good condition. 1st item: Some residue or discoloration of the image, especially around the stag's left ear, the mountains at left, and in the lettering. Some loss to gilt and paint on frame. 2nd item: Some general wear commiserate with age including unobtrusive creases in the lower left of the image and in the words "insurance company" and some debris in the smoke, upper left. Minuscule white specks appear in the upper text. Several scratches on the frame. 3rd item: A 3" tear runs through the "C" and "A" of the word "California" in the upper text and another tear extends from the roof of the building and behind the frame in the upper left. An 8 1/2" tear runs through the horse-drawn carriage in the lower right of the image, extending beyond sight area. Colors are faded and several areas of discoloration include a spot in the lower right of the advertising text area and two more in the sky, upper right. Some toning to paper and gilt loss and scrapes on frame. Not examined outside of frames.
