Both volumes bear annotations by the previous owner, John Davis. Davis has signed the ffep in pencil in volume two. He has also noted that the books are "not at all reliable" on the title page of volume one. His annotations in volume one show a bit of disdain for the text. In a few instances he simply writes "lie" in the margin. Books give an interesting look at the state of the population in the United States as of 1850. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of steel engravings and vignettes. Provenance: the estate of Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Scattered foxing. Scuffing and a bit of wear to original embossed boards of volume one. Scuffing and a few white spots to original blind stamped cloth boards of volume two.
