1st item: FISHER, Richard S. The Book of the World; Being an Account of All Republics, Empires, Kingdoms, and Nations, in Reference to their Geography, Statistics, Commerce, &c. Both volumes bear annotations by the previous owner, John Davis. Davis has signed the ffep in pencil in volume two. He has also noted that the books are "not at all reliable" on the title page of volume one. His annotations in volume one show a bit of disdain for the text. In a few instances he simply writes "lie" in the margin. Books give an interesting look at the state of the population in the United States as of 1850. Each state listing includes the number of "slaves" and/or "colored persons" as part of the population information. 2nd item: BRYANT, William Cullen. Picturesque America or the Land We Live In. Original Morocco leather with elaborate blind stamping to covers. Title work on spine and cover in gold gilt. All edges gold gilt. Profusely illustrated with hundreds of steel engravings and vignettes. Provenance: the estate of Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Scattered foxing. Scuffing and a bit of wear to original embossed boards of volume one. Scuffing and a few white spots to original blind stamped cloth boards of volume two.
