Arthur Burdett Frost (Pennsylvania/California, 1851-1928) watercolor and gouache on board illustration from Joel Chandler Harris's Uncle Remus tale, "The Hard-Headed Woman", published in The Metropolitan Magazine, August 1905, Vol. XXII, No. V. Depicts an African-American woman reacting to the spectral vision of a floating cauldron, with a caption reading "When the 'oman fell, de pot make at her a chunk er red fire", in pencil, centered below image. Includes page 605-606 of the Metropolitan Magazine depicting the illustration and the reverse text page. Board – 22" H x 15" W. Magazine sheet – 10" H x 6 7/8" W. American, early 20th century. CONDITION: Illustration in overall good condition with toning to edges, 7/8" area of tape residue, lower right edge. Magazine sheet with 8 1/4" x 3/4" area of loss to left edge, areas of toning.
