Scarce Claiborne Parish, Louisiana, 19th century coin silver Agricultural Premium Cup or Mug, marked for Adolph Himmel of New Orleans (1825-1877). Flared beaded rim with punchwork decoration over bulbous sides and a flaring, acanthus banded footring; central cartouche engraved PPEMIUM (sic) / CLAIBORNE AGRICUL. SOCIETY 1871. Stamped A. HIMMEL / COIN / NEW ORLEANS to underside. Spiral ribbed handle. 3 1/4"H. 3.26 oz troy. Note: the date on this cup corresponds to the year the Claiborne Agricultural Society was permanently organized. Claiborne Parish itself was founded in 1828 out of the county of Natchitoches in the Northwestern section of the state.
PROVENANCE: Private Southern collection.
CONDITION: Handle possibly added later or repaired, some minor wear to inscription, otherwise very good condition.
