Large Italian school oil on canvas genre painting, circle of Johann Carl Loth (1632 -1698), depicting three biblical figures, Lot and his two daughters. Lot is depicted in the center partaking in libation from his partially nude daughter, while the other daughter, attired in blue, looks on. Signed lower right "C or G Piloti(?)". Housed in a period Rococo style heavily carved frame with an acanthus leaf and flower decoration and an integral gilt matte. Reverse of frame with old labels including one with script reading LOTH. Sight: 49 1/2" H x 84 3/4" W. Framed: 63 3/4" H x 99 1/2" H. Probably 18th century.
PROVENANCE: The collection of a Tennessee institution.
CONDITION: Overall grime with areas of white transfer. Numerous areas of exfoliation and inpainting, mostly to lower third of painting. Canvas has horizontal seam running the full length of the canvas, lower quadrant. Old scattered repairs visible to back with some areas of dampstaining. Perimeter of painting with strip lining. Frame with scattered losses and repairs, most notably to one corner.
