All with original hand coloring and housed in gilt wood frames. These engravings are from the 8th volume of the publication, John Cassin's "Mammalogy and Ornithology," 1858. 1st item: Plate 14, depicting a perched Nyctibius aethereus, or long-tailed potoo, after G.G. White. Sight: 17 3/4" H x 12" W. Framed: 27 7/8" H x 19 7/8" W. 2nd item: Plate 18, depicting three images of a perched Todiramphus, a genus of kingfisher, after G. G. White. After Titian Ramsay Peale. Sight: 17 3/4" H x 12" W. Framed: 25 7/8" H x 19 7/8" W. 4th item: Plate 37, depicting a standing bird identified as a "Numenius femoralis" (now Numenius tahitiensis or Bristle-thighed Curlew), after W. E. Hitchcock. Sight: 12" H x 17 3/4" W. Framed: 19 7/8 H x 25 7/8" W. Note: Dougal is best known for this series of engravings after drawings by participants in the United States Exploring Expedition, including artists Titian Ramsay Peale, the son of the early American painter Charles Wilson Peale. Under Captain Charles Wilkes, USN, the artists and explorers travelled to South America, Australia, Antarctica, the Pacific Islands, and the northwest coast of the United States. According to Bennett's "A Practical Guide to American Nineteenth Century Color Plate Books," only 150 sets of Cassin's volume were printed. Vol. 8 was first published by Titian Peale in 1848 but this volume was later replaced by Cassin's publication.
