After John James Audubon (Haiti/New York, 1785 – 1851), chromolithograph on paper depicting two hawks feasting on two duck carcasses, with a feather hovering in the air between the hawks and drops of blood dripping from the beak of the right-hand hawk. Plate 20 from "The Birds of America" edition by Julius Bien (Germany/New York, 1826 – 1909), 1860. Marginal text below image describes the birds as "Great-footed Hawk, Falco Peregrinus. Gmel, Male, I. Female, 2. Green-winged Teal and Gadwal." Additional marginal text reads " Drawn From Nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.R.S.," lower left, and "Chromolithy by J. Bien, New York, 1860," lower right. Numbered "12-2," upper-left margin, and "Plate 20," upper-right margin. Housed under glass in a wooden frame. Sight: 39" W x 26 1/2" H. Framed: 45 1/4" W x 32 1/2" H.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Dr. Martin Perez, Chattanooga, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Print is in very good condition on double-elephant sheet with wide margins, even toning to paper. Some foxing, most visible around the left-hand hawk and in left-hand margin. Scattered minuscule white spots throughout. A 1 1/2" x 2" area of abrasion to paper in lower right margin. Not examined outside of frame. Frame with scattered scuff marks and thin line of white paint visible along lower left edge, 12" in length.
