Southern pieced cotton quilt stitched in distinctive colors of oxblood brown, dark blue, and orange in the "Slashed Star" pattern, first published by Ladies Art Co. as a mail order pattern offered in 1889. Quilting is by the piece. Quilting knots visible on back. 72" x 94". Circa 1890. Note: Oxblood brown, dark blue, and orange colors are typically found in Carolina and Georgia quilts of the late 1800s. Dark quilting thread used over dark pieced area is a regional characteristic. Similar sewing is seen in the "Seven Stars" pattern quilt that is also in this sale.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition. Appears unwashed, colors not faded, seams are secure. One water stain on front, measuring 11" x 6", in addition to minor spotting. Hole, measuring 1/2", at center of quilt due to stress of repeated folding. Backing fabric is discolored and stained. Hole, measuring 1" x 3/4", to backing, not visible on front.
