John J. Audubon (Haiti/New York, 1785-1851) Havell edition "Birds of America" aquatint with engraving and hand coloring in watercolors depicting four birds perched on a flowering branch. Birds are identified in the lower register, from left to right, as "Lazuli Finch. Fringilla Amcena. 1 Male Spring Plumage," "Clay-Coloured Finch. Emberiza Pallida, Swains. 2 Male," and "Oregon Snow Finch. Fringilla Oregona, Towns. 3 Male 4 Female." The plant is identified in extreme lower center as "Plant Liberty Bush. Azalea Nudiflora." Printed in upper register is "No. 80." in Arabic numerals and "Plate CCCXCVIII (398)" in Roman numerals. Printed in lower right is "Engraved, Printed and Coloured by R. Havell. 1837." Printed in lower left is "Drawn From Nature by J. J. Audubon. F.R.S. F.LS." Housed in a modern wood frame with gilt fillet and black-and-gold painted glass border. Sheet: 21 13/16" H x 14 7/8" W. Framed: 26 1/2" H x 19" W. Note: In about 1820, John James Audubon declared an ambitious intent to paint every bird in North America and to fund it by selling groups of printed plates of his paintings to subscribers. He insisted on the bookÃs large format–printed on the largest handmade sheets available at that time–in order to portray the birds in their actual size and natural habitat. The result was the ornithological masterpiece, "The Birds of America," Havell Edition, published periodically 1826–1838. There were 435 different prints of 497 bird species and an estimated 180 complete sets were produced; today about 110 (some sources say 120) remain intact as bound book volumes owned by museums, institutions and private individuals. PROVENANCE: Private West Tennessee Collection.
CONDITION: Sheet has been substantially trimmed and is hinge mounted to mat. Print has no watermark, presumably lost entirely due to trimming. Print was originally issued with especially wide margins, now removed, however plate size matches the original plate size of 19 ½" H x 12 ¼" W (See Suzanne M. Low, "Guide to Audubon's Birds of Americaâ"[William Reese Company & Donald A. Heald, 2002], 203). Condition overall is good, with toning to sight area and mat burn.
