Condition: back support for one frame needsreattaching, otherwise excellent condition. 3 1/4" x 2 1/2" sight, 5 3/8 x 4 3/4" framed. Circa 1880s. Note: Joel Battle Fort (1854-1934), whose family were early settlers of Robertson County, Tennessee, served as a judge in that county forseveral years before moving his family to Nashville. These photographs descended in their family. Artist note: Brothers Ebenezer and Peter Ross Calvert were successful photographers and painters in Nashville at the turn of the century. Both were born in Yorkshire, England, where they studied art before arriving in Nashville in the 1870s. The Calvert brothers worked for several Nashville galleries before setting up their own studio. They taught art and did oil and watercolor paintings, pastels, crayon drawings, and miniatures on ivory, but photography was their livelihood, with class photographs serving as their specialty.
