Classical gilt and patinated bronze mantel clock with “bust a l’antique” of George Washington by Louis Mallet, circa 1820. Comprised of a plinth form base with gilt acanthus leaf and laural wreath mounts, white enamel dial having a gilt bezel with Roman numeral chapter ring and signed “Ls. Mallet/ H. DE M.D. D’Orleans/No. 1078″, all surmounted by a patinated bronze bust of George Washington. 18 1/2″ H x 7 5/8″ W x 7 5/8” D. 19.8 lbs. Note: Mallet was clockmaker to the Duke of Orleans in Paris from the late 18th century until 1824 and carried the title of “Horloger de M. Le Duc d’Orleans”. His firm produced several different versions of clocks featuring figures of George Washington for the American market. (Ref. Thomas B. Allen, “A Republic in Time: Temporality and Social Imagination in Nineteenth-Century America”, University of North Carolina Press, 2008, pp. 74-78). CONDITION: 4 small hairlines to dial area between “7” and “8”, largest is 3/4″ L; a few tiny dark spots of oxidation to lower front edge of bust (chest area), overall good condition. A couple of screws appear to be replaced in the clockworks.
