After Peter Paul Reubens (Flemish/Belgium/Germany, 1577-1640) large Baroque Old Master style oil on canvas painting titled "The Descent of the Cross". Depicts Christ's deposition, or His removal from the cross by attendants and apostles towards The Virgin Mother, Mary Magdalene, and Salome who mourn at his feet. Inscription reading "The Descent of the Cross" Painted in the Cathedral at Antwerp. From Rubens Masterpiece. By W.H. Howard, Sept. 1894" and stamp for "Geo. Rowney & Co. London, W." en verso. Housed in an ornate gilt and gesso frame with cartouche decoration and acanthus leaf corners. Sight: 35 1/2" H x 27 1/2" W. Framed: 44 3/4" H x 37" W. Note: The original version of this painting remains housed in the Cathedral of Our Lady, Antwerp, Belgium, where this copy was painted.
PROVENANCE: Property of a Tennessee Religious Institution.
CONDITION: Craquelure due to thick varnish, no restoration or retouching. Frame with wear and scattered gilt loss.
