George Dinckel (American/Ohio, 1891-1976) oil on canvas painting depicting a ballet dancer standing at the barre in a contrapposto pose with both hands on the barre, casting a shadow on the wall behind her as she looks out toward the viewer. Signed lower left. Unframed. 35"H x 26"W. Note: George Dinckel studied at the Art Academy in Cincinnati under Frank Duveneck and overseas in Berlin, Munich, Rome and Paris. He exhibited with the Toledo Federation of Art Societies from their beginning in 1917 and had two one-man shows at the Toledo Museum of Art. He later became known for his New England landscapes particularly Rockport scenes. Dinckel held memberships in the Scarab Club in Detroit, the Toledo Tile Club, the North Shore Arts Association, the Rockport Art Association and the Marblehead Arts Association.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Canvas has some creasing and dimpling along stretcher lines and light craquelure. Scattered surface abrasions, particularly at outer edges, but also to a 3/4" area just above subject's head and 3/4" area beside her right upper arm; no indications of touchup under UV light.
