Three (3) samplers, most likely American, including Connecticut and Pennsylvania, all silk on linen. 1st item: Lydia G. Satterlee Connecticut needlework sampler containing 3 alphabets and numbers, her initials, heart motif, name, and birthdate of November 8, 1798, over pictorial motifs of a figure feeding ducks and a tall plant or tree and the initials LGA lower right. Features cross, eyelet, and box stitches. Housed in an ebonized wood frame. Sight: 9 1/2" H x 7" W. Framed: 12" H x 10" W. 2nd item: Martha Jane Bard 1834 sampler with 4 cross-stitched alphabets divided by geometric bands, over signature, and date. No border visible (maybe under mat). Housed in a molded wood frame. Sight: 17" H x 8" W. Framed: 23" H x 14" W. Likely Martha Jane Bard Breckenridge Quigley, b. 1821, Pennsylvania. 3rd item: Small cross-stitched square depicting a strawberry plant with yellow blossom. Unsigned. Float mounted in a wide giltwood cove molded frame with ebonized outer edge. Inscription en verso "Coulter family, Phila, PA". Sight: 4" H x 5" W. Framed: 13" H x 12" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Patricia Kiegel, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: All with some fading and in later frames, under glass, unless otherwise noted. Lydia Satterlee sampler: Some scattered staining and overall discoloration to ground. Possibly unfinished. Martha Jane Bard sampler: Small stain upper left corner, otherwise very good. Strawberry needlework: Discoloration, minimal fading, overall very good condition.
