Spanish School oil on canvas, manner of El Greco, unsigned, large half-length portrait depicting a saint holding a child on his shoulder, possibly St. Joseph. Later gilt/ebonized frame. 35-1/2" x 31-1/2" sight, 41" x 36" framed. Provenance: Estate of Letha J. Cote, Palm Springs, CA. Condition: Appears to have an old linen relining. Possibility of the older canvas laid down on a larger canvas with the borders inpainted to match the older laid down canvas borders.Overall cracquelure with light minute scattered flaking. 1/8" abrasion with paint loss near staff. 2" area of scattered but concentrated flaking near lower left edge. 2-1/2" crack or possible tear on left side near staff. Blacklight reveals scattered infill painting to old cracks and limited areas of inpainting below saint's ear and on child's lower leg. Condition: Appears to have an old linen relining.
