Cuzco School, Spanish Colonial painting depicting the Virgin Mary, dressed in blue and scarlet robes, nursing the Christ child (Madonna Lactans). The pair is painted against a landscape background with birds flying overhead and roses strewn at Mary's feet. Unsigned. Later giltwood frame. 23" x 17" sight, 26" x 20" framed. Peru, 19th/early 20th century. Provenance: Estate of Letha J. Cote, Palm Springs, California. Condition: Scattered areas of craquelure, light overall grime and yellowing to varnish. Long narrow line of scratching/flaking near top right edge (background). Blacklight reveals scattered small areas of minor inpainting to background. Possibly later stretcher.
