Jules Bathieu (Belgium, 1880-1920) oil on canvas genre painting depicting a group of sheep feeding on straw with a white hen in the foreground. Signed "J. Bathieu" lower left. An excerpt about the artist from E. Benezit Dictionnaire Des Peintres Sculpteurs Dessinateurs et Graveurs is taped en verso. Housed in a later giltwood Louis XIV frame. Sight: 17 1/2" H x 13" W. Framed: 27" H x 21 1/2" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Raymond White, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Overall very good condition with craquelure and a few flea bite losses in right lower quadrant, largest approximately 1 mm. Area of abrasion in the upper middle portion of the painting, approximately 1/2", not affecting subject matter. Frame in overall excellent condition with minor losses to gilt and expected wear.
