19th century oil on board oval portrait of Dr. Thomas Menees, MD (TN, 1823-1905) depicting Dr. Menees seated with partially opened book. Brass plate attached to the frame reads: "Thomas O. Menees, MD, Dean of The Medical Department, Vanderbilt, 1875 – 1895". Housed in an oval gilt wood frame. Sight – 29" H x 24" W. Framed – 36" H x 31" W. Biography: Born in Davidson County, TN, Menees served in the Tennessee State Senate in 1857. He represented Tennessee in the First Confederate States Congress and the Second Confederate States Congress from 1862-1865, during the Civil War. Trained a physician and working in Springfield and Nashville, he also served as the dean of the merged medical departments of the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt University between 1875-1895. Condition: Canvas laid down on aluminum backing, losses to canvas perimeter, primarily upper left margin and lower right margin near the brass plate. Visible inpainting to left background of subject's face.
