Item 1: Tsuchiya Koitsu (Japan, 1870-1949) color woodblock print, “Boats at Shinagawa at Night,” 1935. Two small boats sail over rippling water illuminated by moonlight. Published by Doi with 1936/38-1962 Doi Hangaten seal to right-hand margin. Sheet: 15 3/4 in H x 10 1/2 in W. Item 2: Kasamatsu Shiro (Japan, 1898-1991) color woodblock print, “Kinokinisaka in the Rainy Season,” 1938. A tall tree stands on a hillside while a mother and child walk beneath. Published by Wantanabe with postwar J or K seal, lower left (under mat), approx. 7mm. Sheet: 15 1/2 in H x 10 1/2 in W. Both items housed under glass in ebonized wood frames with beige mats. Both frames: 19 1/4 in H x 15 1/4 in W.
PROVENANCE: Estate of Dr. Allen E. Johnson.
CONDITION: Both items in overall very good condition. Both taped to mats, with tape applied to corners en verso. 1st item with minor marginal staining to lower right corner, under mat. 2nd item with slight waviness to sheet. Both frames with minor abrasions and losses.
