1st item: Oil on canvas portrait of a young black woman in a red garment with a blue head covering against a tan background. Unsigned. Handwritten inscription, possibly "42 Barclay", en verso. Housed in a giltwood frame with fluted, bead course, and laurel leaf running patterns. Sight: 7 3/8" H x 5 3/4" W. Framed: 11 1/2" H x 10" W. 2nd item: Oil on board impressionist genre scene depicting a woman sewing. The subject, wearing a colorful dress, is seated on a low stool on a sunlit porch between an open window and ledge with vase of flowers behind her. Unsigned. Housed in a giltwood frame with stenciled geometric decoration. Sight: 7 3/8" H x 9 1/8" W. Framed: 12 3/4" H x 14 3/8" W. Both items 20th century.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville, Tennessee estate.
CONDITION: 1st item: Overall good condition with canvas being mounted on board. UV light reveals some areas in the veil that fluoresce, indicating inpainting. Frame with minor wear and splitting to wood. 2nd item: Overall very good condition. Frame with scattered losses to gilt, largest measuring 4" H x 1/8" W, and shrinkage to corners.
