Seven (7) Keuffel & Esser (K&E) Slide Rules. 1st item: Early K & E 4070/4071 Polyphase Duplex Slide Rule. Made of two-sided celluloid coated mahogany, U shaped bracket ends with adjusting screw; cursor absent (4070 would have brass chisel, 4071 with glass clamshell). Marked “Pat. Oct. 6. 1891”, and “Keuffel & Esser Co. N.Y.”; overall length 12 in.
2nd item: K&E 4053-3F Duplex slide rule with magnifier and fitted case ca. 1909-1914. Mahogany frame with celluloid laminated surfaces. The “F” in the model number designates that this 10 inch rule is Finely Divided with the same markings as their 20-inch slide rules; the L scale is marked from 0 to 1000. Metal framed and lined cursor with magnifier attached, marked “Patented June 20, 1922”. Overall Length 10 5/8 in.
3rd item: K&E 4087-T 20 in Duplex slide rule. Composed of two-sided celluloid coated mahogany, with laminated edges, with glass “clamshell” indicator in an unmarked metal frame; metal L bracket end pieces. Marked “Keuffel & Esser Co. N.Y.” with patent dates “Pat. June 5, ’00” and “Dec. 22, ’08”. Overall 22 1/4 in. L x 1 7/8 in. W.
4th item: K&E N4035 8 in. Mannheim slide rule, “improved” metal rimmed cursor, mahogany construction with celluloid surfacing; scales labeled on left, marked , “Pat. June 5, 1900” and “Keuffel & Esser Co. N.Y.” on top rail as well as side of cursor; both frame and slide with serial number 416966 corresponding to year 1933. Contained in orange leather case with “K&E Mannheim Slide Rule” to top of flap. Rule overall 8 11/16 in L.
5th Item: K&E 4071-T Polyphase Duplex slide rule with Trig scales. Mahogany construction with celluloid surfacing including edges; U-shaped open-out end posts; Clamshell style cursor. Overall 11 5/8 in. L.
6th – 7th Items: Two (2) K&E 1746 (D&P) RR track scales, made in Germany by Dennert & Pape, circa 1888. Wood construction with celluloid surfaces, each well marked “Dennert & Pape Altona Patent”. One additionally marked “Keuffel & Eser Co. New – York & Chicago”. Brass chisel cursors likely reproductions. Overall 10 1/4 in. L.
PROVENANCE: Private West Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: All items in overall very good condition with light wear, toning to celluloid, to be expected from age and manner of use. Cases with expected wear, surface grime.
