Attributed to Charles C. Svendsen (American/Ohio, 1871 – 1959), two (2) oil on board Ohio landscape paintings. 1st item: Small scene of a brilliant sunset framed by trees, titled en verso in pencil "Sunset, Western Hills." Signed Charles C. Svendsen lower left. Additional typewritten label en verso, "In cherished memory of Mrs. Florida Groves Svendsen" along with handwritten artist biographical information. Carved in a 1930s-style husk molded frame, possibly original. Sight: 7" H x 9" W. Framed: 12 1/2" H x 10 1/2" W. 2nd item: Impressionist style winter landscape with a stream flowing through a grove of trees with a white building partially visible in the background. Titled en verso in pen inscription, "Old California Waterwork (where Cincinnati Golf Course is now)" along with attribution to Charles Svendsen. Unsigned. Natural molded wood frame. Sight: 18" H x 14" W. Framed: 21 1/2" H x 17 1/2" W. Note: Charles Svendsen studied with Thomas Noble at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He was also a pupil of Bouguereau and Gabriel Ferrier in the Academy Julian and Academy Colarossi in Paris. He won a bronze at the St. Louis Universal Exposition and was a commissioner of fine arts for Holland and Belgium at the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in Nashville. He also specialized in religious and historical paintings. Svendsen's works are in public collections including Chicago's Vanderpoel Memorial Museum and the Cincinnati Museum of Art.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Carl Klein, Brentwood, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: Craquelure throughout, 1/2" area of possible overpainting to a small chip at upper right edge. 2nd item: Light grime, overall very good condition.
