Sue (Susie) Weakley (Tennessee, born c. 1895, d. ?) archive of painting, sketches and etchings. Includes oil on board painting of a woman in Orientalist clothing and headdress, seated in a leaning position, with a ewer at her feet. Art Moderne style giltwood molded frame. Unsigned. 18 1/2" x 20" sight, 21 1/2" x 23" framed. Also includes 8 small etchings of the Library / Breslin Tower at University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee (3 1/2" x 1 1/2 plate) and 5 large etchings of the same subject (6" x 4" plate), 1 etching of the Bell Tower at Belmont University (formerly Ward Seminary), 2 etchings of a portico at Belmont Mansion, plus 2 other etchings of unknown buildings, 4 bookplate etchings, 10 etchings of various sizes depicting young women, 4 sketches (a rural cabin scene, a street scene, a bookplate, and a scene of man and woman in art studio. All range in size from 2" x 4" to 5" x 7". Together with a Ward Seminary Art Department portfolio, undated but circa 1912, with printed images of artworks by several of the art students, including a painting and several "sketches from life" by Weakley, and 2 small photographs believed to be of Weakley with unidentified subjects (one is labeled Central Park, 1916). Note: Sue or Susie Weakley was a Nashville artist and illustrator. She studied art at Ward Seminary in Nashville where she was a member of the Studio Circle, and exhibited works at the Parthenon in a 1914 exhibit that also featured works by Cornelius Hankins, Washington Girard and Mayna Treanor Avent. She is also believed to have worked in the fashion industry as an illustrator and had work published in the Southern Women's Journal. Provenance: descended in the family of the artist. Condition: Painting: 1 1/2" area of flaking or white paint residue on skirt, 1" scratch or paint residue in floor area, otherwise good condition. Sketches and etchings: All with light toning; sketches have some edge tears and corner creases, etchings are in generally very good condition although some have reduced margins.
