Joseph Vincent Nicholas Francis Weiss (English/French, 1859-1919), known as Jose Weiss, small oil on board British landscape painting entitled "On the Thames" depicting three trees growing along the side of the river Thames before a cloud-filled sky. Signed lower right. With title inscribed to back of stretcher and old price sticker with artist's name affixed to verso, along with old inventory sticker. Housed in an ornate giltwood frame with nameplate. Sight: 6 1/4" H x 10 1/4" W. Frame: 16" H x 19 7/8' W. Biographical Note: Weiss, also remembered as a pioneer of aviation, was born in Paris and later emigrated to England. He was known for his paintings of English landscapes, particularly the Sussex countryside, in the Barbizon school style, which appealed to patrons in England and America alike. He exhibited at the Royal Academy while living and today his works are in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada, the Falmouth Art Gallery, the Southampton Art Gallery, and the Kirklees Museum.
CONDITION: Painting with 1 1/4" x 1 1/4" area of overpainting to upper left corner. Frame with loose corners and losses to gilt, largest area 3/4" L, lower right corner.
