Large Carl Gutherz (Tennessee/Missouri, 1844-1907) oil on canvas three-quarter length portrait painting depicting his wife, Kate Scruggs Gutherz (1850-1909). Depicted seated in a carved chair and turned to the left, the subject rests her arms in her lap in a gently crossed position, holding a gold eyeglass in her left hand. She wears a high-neck velvet dress, and her upswept hair is adorned with a black hat with white flowers. Signed lower left “Carl Gutherz, W. D. C,” and dated 1898. Housed in a simple gilt wood frame. Sight: 57 1/2 in. H x 42 1/2 in. W. Framed: 60 1/2 in. H x 45 1/2 in. W.
PROVENANCE: Deaccessioned by the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art to benefit the acquisitions fund.
CONDITION: Overall good condition. Some exfoliation to paint along the right margin and the upper right corner. Inpainting to the lower half of the painting, primarily to the chair area and to the skirt. Please see the UV light photos provided.
