James W. Bartholomew (United Kingdom, 19th century) oil on canvas painting depicting ships in choppy water under foggy/cloudy conditions, with several other boats moored along a mountainous coastline in the background. Signed and date "J W Bartholomew 1850" lower right. Bonham's auction label dated Thursday, November 7th, 1968, secured to back of frame, along with title clipping "Fishing Boats Leaving Harbor in Squally Weather". The clipping misidentifies the artist as F.W. Bartholomew. Housed in an antique giltwood frame with ribbon molding at rabbet edge. Sight – 17 1/2" H x 29 1/2" W. Framed – 20 3/4" H x 32 1/2" W. Provenance: the estate of Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. CONDITION: Relined. Pinpoint sized areas of paint loss scattered on surface of painting, primarily top left of canvas. Some surface grime. Scattered concentrated areas of overpainting, largest approx. 3" diam., mainly in sky area. Scattered losses to frame.
