Civil War Era CDV photograph album of KY interest with photos of Union Generals including future President James Garfield, plus a framed collection of 7 Confederate States of America (CSA) currency notes, 2 items total. 1st item: CDV album with small label inside cover for Webster & Bro. Photograph and Ambrotype Gallery, Louisville, KY. Contains 46 cartes-de-visite (CDVs) and 6 tintypes, 52 photographic images total. Five (5) CDVs depict men in Union uniforms, including one (1) of Major General James Abram Garfield (1831-1881), the 20th president of the United States, serving from March to September 1881; three (3) CDVs of Captain George W. Riley, 10th Kentucky Volunteer Infantry (two depicting Riley in uniform and one depicting Riley in a three-piece suit), and one (1) CDV depicting two men, identified as James "Jim" Ewing and Andy, with studio marks for Charles C. Giers, Nashville TN, and ink inscriptions by Jim's grandson stating that he "…fought in the battle of Chickamauga at Chattanooga and was wounded there…" en verso. The majority of the images depict men, women, and children in 19th-century dress in studio settings, including one (1) CDV of a woman with D. Stuber, Louisville, KY studio marks, and a George Washington 2 cent Playing Cards US Inter. Rev. Blue US Postage Stamp en verso. The CDVs are housed in a brown embossed leather album with gilt titling to covers and spine with brass hardware, floral endpapers. 6 1/4" H x 5 1/4" W x 2 3/4" D. 2nd item: Framed collection of seven (7) currency notes, including one (1) 1864 $10 CSA note, one (1) 1864 State of Mississippi note, one (1) 1863 50 Cent State of North Carolina fractional note, one (1) 1864 $5 CSA note, one (1) 1863 $5 State of North Carolina note, one (1) 1862 $1 CSA note, and one (1) 1864 $20 CSA note. All mounted to a grey velvet mat and housed under glass in a silver metallic painted wooden frame. Sight: 24 1/2" H x 9 1/4" W. Framed: 26 1/2" H x 11 1/2" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of Raymond White, Nashville, Tennessee.
CONDITION: 1st item: All photographic images in overall good condition, one tintype with bends, creases. Most not examined outside of mats. Front matter page and sleeves with foxing spots, scuffs, tears, largest 2", general handling wear. Sleeve binding is separated from spine. Leather covers with rubbing, wear, bumped corners, one brass clasp is not present. Garfield CDV in overall good condition with 1/4" area of flaking, minute loss to top left corner (does not affect overall image). 2nd item: All notes are in circulated condition and pasted to mat. Frame with areas of loss, largest 7 3/4", to paint.
