American School, circa 1865, watercolor on porcelain miniature portrait of a woman, seated in a Victorian chair and turned in three quarter view against a plain olive green/brown background. The woman, who appears to be in her 60s, wears a black coat and lace veil over a white blouse and turban. The oval painting is mounted in a plain, unmarked oval silver frame with hanging loop at top. Unsigned. Plaque: 3 1/4 in. H x 2 3/4 in. W. Frame: 3 1/2 in. H x 3 in W.
PROVENANCE: Private Middle Tennessee collection.
CONDITION: Painting: 3/16 inch scratch to hair area, one pointpoint sized abrasion to upper right background, otherwise excellent condition. Frame with some denting around lower sight edge, oxidation.
