New York School, circa 1835, circle of Samuel F.B. Morse, oil on canvas portrait of a woman with dark hair wearing a gold dress and red, fur trimmed cape, stenciled mark on back of canvas PREPARED BY EDWARD DECHAUX. Possibly original giltwood and composition frame with floral corner moldings. Sight – 29" H x 24 1/2" W. Framed – 38" H x 33" W. Tag on painting identifies the subject as "Mrs. Pendleton." CONDITION: In need of restoration. Original canvas. 2" tear across subject's nose/eye area, patch to 1" tear at ear, scattered areas of scratching with attendant paint loss/flaking. Frame has been repainted with gold radiator paint and has multiple losses to molding particularly at corners.
