Mid 20th c. plush Gund Donkey in boxing gloves and Jee-Bee "I am a Republican" Elephant, plus 17 buttons, 2 plastic campaign whistles and 1 plastic GOP donation piggy bank. Political buttons include 1 rare 1949 President Harry S. Truman and Alben W. Barkley Tennessean Inaugural button with ribbons, plus 1 Forward With Truman button, and campaign buttons for Dewey/Warren (2), Kefauver for President, Elect Russell President, Win with Rockefeller (2 small rectangular and 4 round), Rocky in '60, and Goldwater buttons. Also included is a "Nov. 22 – a Red Letter Day at West End" button (possibly commemorating the JFK assassination), a 1959 Masters Golf Tournament Trophy Room button and a 1962 Nashville Tennessean Seattle World's Fair Tour button. Donkey: 15 1/4" H, Elephant: 11" H. Truman 1949 Inaugural button: 1 3/4" diameter. Note: Russell Speights of Nashville was Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Tennessean Newspaper from 1948-1964 and attended the trip to the inauguration for which this button was made.
CONDITION: Truman 1949 button in very good condition with some wear, fading and fraying to ribbons. Plush animals have minor wear, light handing grime, and fading. Donkey has split to boxing glove. Masters, Goldwater, World's Fair and Nov. 22 buttons have some grime. Other items in very good condition. Both animals have original tags.
