Oil on board painting depicting a surprised rabbit or hare emerging from floodwaters only to be confronted by a fox, after a drawing and wood engraving published 1871 by Ludwig Beckmann (German, 1822-1902) and entitled "Aus dem Regen in die Traufe" (From the Rain into the Eaves, a German saying mirroring the English "out of the fire and into the frying pan."). Signed lower left, "C. E. Allen" and dated "Dec. 31 – 85." With old F. W. Devoe & Co., New York, artists' supplies sticker en verso. Housed in a giltwood frame with floral motif. Sight: 6 3/4 " H x 9 1/4 " W. Frame: 11 " H x 13 1/4" W. Probably American.
PROVENANCE: Private Nashville Collection.
CONDITION: With frame abrasion to lower edge. Otherwise good condition. Not examined out of frame. Frame with cracking and superficial grime.
