Peter S. Buchanan (Scottish, fl. 1960-1911) oil on canvas landscape painting, “Running Brook,” 1899. Farmers load a hay wagon in a field, while ducks cluster in the foreground on the bank of a flowing creek under a large tree in full canopy. Signed lower left, “P. Buchanan.” Additionally signed, titled and dated en verso. Housed in an antique, likely original giltwood and molded composition frame with floral and scroll motifs and acanthus corners. Sight: 19 1/2 in. H x 29 1/2 in. W. Frame: 31 1/4 in. H x 41 1/4 in. H.
PROVENANCE: Private Chattanooga area collection.
CONDITION: Painting is in overall good condition with scattered craquelure; area of buckling left corner; stretcher lines to canvas. Would benefit from re-stretching. Frame has been regilt with some restoration to small losses, scattered minor cracking and some minor losses to the edges.
