Middle Tennessee Sheraton cherry sugar chest, poplar secondary. Rectangular hinged top over a dovetailed case divided into one large and two small sections, two dovetailed and scratchbeaded drawers with brass eschutcheons, all on tall turned Sheraton feet. 39 3/4" H x 29 1/4" W x 19 3/4" D. Circa 1840. Provenance: Murfreesboro, TN collection, purchased 26 years ago from the estate of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Harrison, who lived on East Main Street in Murfreesboro. In 1911, the Harrison family was one of two land-owning families that donated property for the original grounds of the Middle Tennessee State Normal School, now known as Middle Tennessee State University. The Harrison house is the site of MTSU's Center for Historic Preservation. CONDITION: Old top but not original to chest. Back of case planed, removing the original patina. Back top edge of case with patches where the original hinges were located. Refinshed. Top not secured to the base.
