British School, early 19th century, oil on canvas portrait of a gentleman identified by 20th century label en verso as Dr. David Forrest (1800-1834), a surgeon in the East India Company who is buried at Kirkcaldy, Scotland. The subject is depicted seated, wearing a dark blue coat tie and yellow vest, with dark thinning hair and brown eyes, against an indistinct background. Unsigned. Antique, possibly original, wide molded giltwood frame with carved Rococo style corner ornamentation. Sight: 29 in. H x 24 in. W. Frame: 40 in. H x 35 in. W.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Ann B. Lee, Franklin, TN.
CONDITION: Painting: Lined; repaired tear with retouch, 2 inches in length, upper left background above subject’s head. A few other minor spots of retouch. Scattered craquelure. Some darkening to varnish.Frame: re-gilt, with scattered minor losses, cracks, repairs and scuffs.
