Item 1: Lithograph on Somerset paper entitled “Peter Grimes.” Two women in black and seen from behind look out over what appears to be a body of water while a third figure sits to their left, partially obscured by rocky forms that fill the foreground. From the 1984 Metropolitan Opera Fine Art II portfolio. Signed, dated, and numbered 45/250 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by American Atelier and co-published by Circle Fine Art and Metropolitan Opera Association, with American Atelier and Metropolitan Opera Association blind stamps to lower corners and printed publisher information plus copyright date en verso. Sheet: 30 in. H x 22 in. W. Note: This image is a reference to a section from the narrative poem “The Borough” by George Crabbe and a subsequent opera by Benjamin Britten. 1983. Item 2: Etching and aquatint in colors on Arches paper entitled “The Young Couple.” A couple shown from the waist up embrace one another. Signed, titled, and numbered 159/225 in pencil, lower margin. Printed by Robert Cale. Sheet: 32 1/2 in. H x 30 in. W. 1971.
CONDITION: 1st item with marginal foxing, especially to upper margin, outside of image, and faint mat toning, also most prominent to upper margin. Old mounting tape affixed to upper edge en verso. 2nd item with foxing primarily to left margin, outside of image/plate mark. Staining or accretion from out mat runs along perimeter of sheet, plus liquid staining along upper edge. With old tape affixed to corners en verso and faint creasing, especially to upper left corner, approximately ten inches long. Also with a few minor scuffs primarily outside of plate mark.
