Large and ornate oval sugar bowl, with horizontal gadroon and acanthus border decoration, acanthus overlaid c-scroll handles, the bowl with repousse shell decoration over a lobed lower body, oval base with four paw feet atop balls, topped with encircled spiral and winged ornamentation. Gilded interior. Base marked AMB in rectangle (twice), possibly Alpheus W. Bascom (working Maysville, Kentucky circa 1830s-d. 1845, may have trained in Cincinnati in early 1830s) – although this does not match the other known marks associated with Bascom. 5-1/2"H x 9-1/4"W x 5-1/4"D. 17.41 oz troy. Provenance: Private Arkansas Collection. Condition: Monogram possibly removed, otherwise excellent condition.
