1st Item: Antique oak gun case by George Gibbs, having originally housed a Gibbs .500 BP double rifle. Canvas-covered oak with brass corner reinforcements and handle attachments, brass locking mechanism with functioning latch release; retains original partitions with red felt lining, and straps; interior also contains a leather rifle sling (later) and two brass Kynoch .500 Nitro Express casings. Exterior lightly embossed with "W A Morgan". Interior label reads "George Gibbs, Gun & Rifle Manufacturer. Bristol. Offices 39 Corn Street -Works, Rupert Hall". Outside dimensions: 29" L x 9" D x 3" H. Interior barrel compartment 28" L, stock compartment approx. 17" L x 5 1/2" W. 2nd Item: Antique gun case from J. Graham & Co., canvas covered wood and stiff board case with leather corner reinforcements, functioning brass latch, leather straps, red felt lined interior, complete with partitions and interior leather securing strap, originally housed a rifle with 26" bbl. Interior label reads: "J. Graham & Co., Established 1857. Practical Gun and Rifle Makers 27 Union Street, Inverness." Exterior has leather patch with previous owner name "C. A. MacLeod" and various paper labels relating to ship passage, "Port Sudan to London" "Capt. CA MacLeod" and "SS Strathaird" etc. Outside dimensions: 49 1/2" L x 7 1/2" D x 3 3/4" H. Interior compartment overall 48" L. Both ca. early 20th Century.
CONDITION: 1st Item Gibbs Case: felt with some losses, hinges replaced, right strap broken, no key, but release functions, general wear. 2nd Item J Graham: overall wear to canvas, damage to corners, split front lip of lid not affecting closure
