Ness (California/Minnesota, 1873-1930) oil on canvas landscape painting, vertically oriented, titled "Alpine Grove- San Mateo Ca" depicting the trunks of sequoias or redwood trees in a forest with verdant foliage. Signed "A.R. Ness" lower right. Titled and additionally signed en verso with loose leaf artist biography from the third volume of ARTISTS IN CALIFORNIA 1786-1940, by Edan Milton Hughes. Housed in a period molded giltwood frame. Sight: 29" H x 13 " W. Framed: 36 3/4" H x 20 1/2" W.
PROVENANCE: The Estate of James Lewis, Carthage, Tennessee.
CONDITION: Some craquelure and light flaking to center of work, one area of exfoliation in right-center, one area of loss in lower left corner, approximately 1/4".
