Double-sided hand-painted pub sign, “The Kingfisher”, oil on board, depicting a vivid blue and yellow long-beaked bird flying over a marshy landscape. The image is the same on the front and back. Signed “Rex Horton” lower left of each side. Molded wood frame. Sight: 42 in. H x 36 in. W. Frame: 46 in. H x 40 in. W. Likely British or Canadian, early to mid 20th century.
PROVENANCE: The estate of Dr. Ian M. Mathison, Murfreesboro TN and Big Rapids, MI.
CONDITION: Both sides have scattered discoloration atop and under the yellowed varnish layer, likely from outdoor exposure, and losses to paint along exterior edges. One side is in good condition with a small area of overpainting to the lower left quadrant. The other side has several areas of loss and exfoliation to the paint and varnish layer, including to the bird’s beak, scattered across the lower quarter of the sign. Some other scattered areas of loss and wear consistent with outdoor exposure. The frame may not be original and has some wear and discoloration.
